![]() Kunkels Pass VättisVättis
![]() The Kunkelsp Pass- already a route much used by the Romans. In order to detour the marshy plain of the Rhine between Sargans and Chur the Porta Romana led them from Pfäfers via Vättis to Tamins. And the free Valaisan used the pass in order to visit the markets of Graubünden. Description of route
We suggest that you take the post bus to Vättis. Here you follow the footpath in the direction of the Kunkels Pass. The route leads along the banks of the Görbs stream gently rising through flowered meadows and in the shade of forest trees to Unterkunkels (1073m a.s.l.). In the little village of Kunkels one comes to the mountain restaurant Eggwald. Here the climb begins to bring you to the top of the pass (1357m a.s.l.) On the alpine meadow there is a simple restaurant that is open on fine weekends. Whether one continues the walk to Tamins or prefers to stay on the lovely meadow for a while enjoying the view and then returning to Vättis on foot, is all the same. This excursion is always rewarding. The descent to Tamins leads past romantic tunnel windows which open up a marvellous view of the valley with the merging of the upper and lower Rhine rivers. On the way back one wanders valley-wards to the Graubünden village Tamins and continues to Reichenau where there is the connection with the Rhaetian railway. Good about this tour: You have completely circumscribed the Caland. The mountain which builds the south flank of the Tamina valley.
