Her father a physician, her mother a poetess with pietistic leanings, Johanna , the fourth of six children, grew up in the atmosphere of a country doctor's household. After the village school and private tuition from the local parson she spent three years in Zürich studying foreign languages and music, then went to boarding-school for one year in Yverdon (Lake Neuchatel). From 1845 , back home, she gave lessons to her younger sisters and began an intensive autodidactic study of literature. After her marriage with the lawyer (later town-clerk) Bernhard Spyri she moved to Zürich in 1852.
