Heidi was five years old when she was taken by her Aunt Dete to the grandfather on the alp. Dete said she had looked after the child for four years, namely from that day on when her sister Adelheid, the child's mother, had died. But now she herself had received a very tempting offer from an aristocratic family in Frankfurt and so it was his duty to take care of the child. For it was not possible for Heidi to stay any longer in Pfäfers village with the old woman Ursel, who was too old and also blind and Heidi wouldn't be able to learn anything from her. The grandfather was angry about Dete's brazen, heartless attitude but after she had gone, he lovingly took the child into his simple home.
