The Work of Art and its Venue

Amden

"Amden - the work of art and its venue" - art project Roman Kurzmeyer.
The mountain community of Amden was well known at the beginning of the 20th century as a centre of social and artistic experminentation.

The life-reforming settlement "Grappenhof" (1901 - 1906) in Amden and the artists' circle led by the painter Otto Meyer-Amden (1865 - 1933) were the theme of an exhibition in 1999 in the Glarus Art Museum and one on the site of the Amden settlement. The artists Anselm Stalder (Basel), Anya Gallacio (London) and Katharina Grosse (Düsseldorf) at the time created works related specifically to the spectacular landscape high above Lake Walen.

In 2001 Pawel Althamer (Warsaw) displayed his work done in Amden, the sculpture "Weronika" within an installation which also included drawings by his daughter Weronika. Anya Gallacio, who in 1999 had planted a row of apple trees in the vicinity of the house formerly occupied from time to time by the German painter Baumeister (1889-1955), came to Amden for a few days and adorned each tree with a gilded apple, all of them drying out in the summer months.
