St Leonhard chapel Bad Ragaz

Bad Ragaz

The St Leonhard Chapel at the western entrance to Bad Ragaz is today frequently used as the "wedding chapel".
The St Leonhard Chapel in Bad Ragaz is a pilgrimage chapel. St Leonhard, the patron saint of farmers and cattle, was revered here.

A particular feature of the St Leonhard Chapel is that it possesses three altars. Various frescos, revealed during renovation work in 1981, show the holy Leonhard as church patron, the mysteries of the childhood of Christ, the coronation of the Virgin Mary as well as the holy Fridolin, to whom the right hand side altar (south-west) is dedicated. The vestibule was fitted out as a room commemorating the battle of Ragaz in 1446. It is richly decorated with paintings and writings. Time and patience are required to decipher the story of the battle. Niklaus von der Flüh, better known as Brother Klaus, is supposed to have fought here.

The foundation walls of the chapel are, however, very much older, in the course of centuries numerous alterations were undertaken. The chapel's donor is considered to be that Friedrich von Reitnau, brother of the then Pfäfers abbot, Werner von Reitnau, whose family crest can still be seen on the wall of the left side nave near the side altar.
