Stone, to be used for various purposes, has been quarried from Schollberg for more than one hundred years.
For environmental reasons and reasons relating to technical permission the extraction activity moved underground in 1985. Since underground extraction began up until the end of 2008, 1 million cubic metres of solid rock was taken out of the mountain. The resulting material is further processed to provide armour stone (used to fortify stream beds or shorelines), gravel for road building and mixed aggregates for concrete production and dry mortar.
The dimensions of the underground cavities are up to (w.)12m x (h.) 18m and they are arranged in a chess board layout.
With the laying of the foundation stone on 17th September 2007, the construction of the open air facility for the production of building material was started. Since 1st January 2009 the newly founded company, Baustoffe Schollberg AG, has been active.
