Cultural diversity in Mels is traditional. Old customs, such as the "Alpabfahrt" when the cows come down from their summer grazing pstures, the cattle show or Fasnacht (carnival), are stongly adhered to. Also the legends handed down in Sarganserland still keep the myths alive. The locals come together for the numerous traditional events. Mels celebrates its festivals like nowhere else.
On the sunny slopes at the foot of the Gonzen and on the Nidberg an outstanding wine is produced. It comes as no surprise that one of the best Swiss restaurants, Seppi Kalberer's „Schlüssel", is here.
